Donald Trump’s future cabinet is still a matter of discussion, but if a previous tweet of his is any indication, it seems like we can count on an Attorney General Trey Gowdy. Gowdy is not currently in much of the deliberations about the Attorney General position. Rudy Giuliani recently took himself out of consideration for it, and there is some speculation that Senator Kelly Ayotte may receive the Secretary of Defense position, but her name has also been dropped for the Attorney General spot. Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi has also been mentioned as a potential candidate, but Trump was dogged by a controversy for a few weeks during the campaign about a donation he made to her campaign. Chris Christie is also an unlikely pick since he is back in the news for all the wrong reasons with his staffers and Bridgegate.
Gowdy recently went back to Capitol Hill, leading some to suspect that he is being vetted for some sort of position.
Gowdy may have just become a more likely pick, because a tweet from Trump has resurfaced from last year where he retweets a supporter of his urging a future President Trump to appoint Gowdy as Attorney General.
Gowdy’s appointment could be made complicated by the fact that he is looking at teaming up with Senator Tim Scott with a ticket to run for South Carolina Lieutenant Governor and Governor, respectively. This would be an almost unstoppable duo, and the fact that both of them were early supporters of Marco Rubio is an interesting component to keep in mind.
If Trump is a man of his word, we may very well see an Attorney General Gowdy. If not, we’ll probably see someone else and we’ll know soon enough.
